My name is Thorisho Kgomo and I am 19 years old. My love for aviation started in 2014 when I attended the South African Women in Aviation (SAWIA) camp.
This camp actively contributes towards the uplifting of young girls through the Girl Fly Programme in Africa. It does this by developing skills in fields such as Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Throughout the duration of the camp, I improved my networking skills and most importantly got introduced hence fell in love with aviation.
I am currently studying Forensic Accountancy at North West University. One of my biggest dreams is to obtain my pilot's license and to inspire girls to know that if I can do it, they can do it too. I still hold on to that dream, although I am still busy with my degree in finances. I am a firm believer of "dreams delayed are not dreams denied'. I encourage girls to apply to be part of the GFPA programme as it can open a lot of doors for them and expose them to inspiring stories about heroes in aviation. During the camp, we were introduced to Doctor Kenneth and Doctor Scott, who informed us about Aerospace Leadership Academy. I applied to the academy and got accepted as of 2015. The academy was an airforce military school. Once you develop love for airplanes there's definitely no turning back.
I recently represented South Africa in Bangkok, Thailand through the United Nations. I've always wanted to have an impact on other people's lives thus the United Nations enabled me to pursue global peace through diplomacy. I have been invited to represent the country again later this year in Malaysia and I believe that God has it under control. The most fantastic thing about these international trips is that you get to see the world from above, and that for me is priceless. I get goosebumps every time I look through the airplane's window and I see myself thrusting into the air as I recollect and apply all the knowledge I have learned about airplanes. I believe that aviation is a special part of life and as it continues to grow.I pray that I get to contribute to that growth.
