“ Empowering women and girls and promoting gender equality is crucial to accelerating sustainable development. Ending all forms of discrimination against women and girls is not only a basic human right, but it also has a multiplier effect across all other development areas” . UN

Meet our Alumna, change maker, role model  Chrystal Mbu. She attended our aviation and space technology camp when she was in high school. “The camp experience was great and well-rounded.We did a lot of fun STEM-related activities and this sparked my interest for all things STEM-related. I was inspired to see women who are confident game changers and were not afraid to reach for their dreams. We were privileged to have awesome camp leaders who offered guidance even after the camp “ .

In grade 11 she realize that she wanted to be someone who uses STEM to make a positive impact around the world and after research she decided that medicine would be a starting point. She is currently in her final year of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of surgery  (MBCHB) and  she has been  involved in a lot of community work including volunteering at two girls home/shelters in Pretoria. After qualifying she would  like to specialise in either General Surgery or Orthopaedic Surgery and continue to make a tangible impact in her community.

" Women make up part of the population and we too have a lot to offer. A society that does not empower females is a society that is not using all its resources and will therefore struggle to do better” when we asked why it is important to empower girls. Chrstal also said that camps such as girls fly aviation and space  give girls from different backgrounds opportunities and experiences they would have otherwise not had. It also opens doors to countless opportunities, amazing friendships and a positive shift in mindset. Her advice  for young girls out there “ Dream big, Set goals  and work hard. You are worthy of every opportunity you're given, you are good enough to occupy the most influential seat in the room “
