With the continued growth in air traffic worldwide, the estimated number of Aviation graduates to meet the global demand in the coming decades is staggering. On the 4th of October 2019, NACO, a company of Royal HaskoningDHV, will be hosting an Aviation Fun Day for Grade 6 to Grade 9 students at McAuley House School in Johannesburg.

This initiative aims to build a pipeline of STEM graduates to meet this demand by inspiring young minds and ignite a passion for possibilities for a brighter tomorrow for us all. The Fun Day is the launch pad for the children to be exposed to Aviation from various vantage points. RHDHV’s Digital Studio will be in attendance to expose these possibility incubators to new technologies. There will be a vocation brainstorm with facilitators from the industry. Pilots, Aeronautical Engineers, Civil and Electrical Engineers as well as Project managers and professionals from the Aviation Business Sector have volunteered to be a part of the mission.

Following the Aviation Day on the 4th of October 2019, NACO in association with McAuley House School will host Embry-Riddle Aeronautical Universities ‘Aviation is your future Massive Open Online Course’.

The course is a project of the Women in Aviation International (WAI) Chapter at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University-Worldwide. It is a self-paced Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), designed for young learners that celebrates ‘Girls in Aviation Day’ on the 5th of October 2019, globally. In the course, ERAU-WW provides learners with some of the best information related to aviation and aeronautics available.

Linda Weiland, an associate professor at the University, a member of the WAI Chapter and one of the course instructors will be in South Africa to facilitate the course for 34 girl students from the school. The course will run for 3 consecutive weekends in October using the ICT facilities provided by the school. Upon completion of the course, the girls will receive a certificate and will be eligible to participate in GFPA Foundation upcoming events.

This is the first facilitated event to be held in South Africa, while the course is available for a set duration period every year to any young girls all around the globe wanting to participate. This will be the fifth ‘Girls in Aviation Day’ GIAD event for the Chapter.

Access to the course is available through GFPA Foundation Website and is expected to open for registrations soon, refer to the GFPA Foundation website.

This initiative was born from a networking event hosted by GFPA Foundation on the 20th of September 2018 at Waterkloof Airforce Base. The tireless and passionate endeavours of Refilwe Ledwaba and her team at GFPA Foundation are integral in bringing about the change we want to see.

This is an opportunity to expose young minds and Industry professionals to each other and start a conversation. We all have a contribution to share.
