Refilwe Ledwaba

Refilwe is a social entrepreneur, STEAM, SDG, and Girl's education advocate, qualified helicopter and fixed-wing pilot instructor.

She is passionate about youth development in Africa, particularly the empowerment of girls. She is the founder of GFPA foundation, and GFPA Global fund. She is a member of the Royal Aeronautical Society, council member of the Aeronautical Society of South Africa (AeSSA) outreach team and a recipient of the Amelia Earhart Memorial Scholarship (AEMSF) for flight training.

Refilwe is also a Techwomen fellow (USA) 2019, Obama Africa leader (Africa)2019 and a Bill and Melinda gates foundation goalkeeper (USA) 2018,2019. She is passionate about education having obtained a BSc (Biochemistry and Microbiology) at UCT; a postgraduate qualification in Business Administration, UCT Business Schools; and an MBA from University of Pretoria’s Gordon Institute of business science. She will be pursuing a PhD in developmental studies. She currently serves on a few organizations as a board member both locally and internationally.

Keneilwe Letselela

Keneilwe is a former University lecturer in Environmental Education and Sustainable Development.

She has supervised and externally examined the research of Masters students in Environmental Education for both University of North West and the University of South Africa. She has vast Project Management skills and has also worked as a Project Manager/ Tourism Development for a District Municipality. Her comprehension of governance and fiduciary responsibilities has seen her serve in various Boards of Directors including the erstwhile Invest North-West (now merged with the North West Development Corporation. Keneilwe is a well-rounded businessperson running several companies operating in Educational Research, Transport and Construction.

She holds a Bachelor of Agriculture in Education, Honours and Masters in Environmental Education from University North West. Her previous involvement in government educational initiatives to improve science, mathematics and technology in previously disadvantaged schools influenced her recent focus in aviation as one of the STEM fields. As a result, she became a member of the GFPA Foundation to work with like-minded individuals in promoting the interest of STEM education to young people especially girls.

GFPA Foundation continues to empower and inspire one girl at a time to be confident and believe in themselves to change the world. To be “the girl who decided to go for it”.

Lerato Ledwaba

Lerato is a passionate, energetic and experienced professional within the management consulting space.

She spent the first 10 years of her career at Deloitte within various departments and was more recently employed by Ernst and Young. Lerato holds a BComm General degree from Wits University as well as a Diploma in Management Accounting.

She spent her seven years at Deloitte dedicated to the mergers and acquisitions team within the Deloitte Corporate Finance division. She has extensive experience working on numerous transactions including Broad-based Black Economic Empowerment ownership transactions, cross-border mergers and acquisitions and capital raising for clients in various industries such as consumer business, telecommunications, construction, mining and mining services. Her time at EY was spent in a similar capacity but more in a management focussed role. In addition, Lerato received intensive business consulting training through the Deloitte Graduate Academy where she was involved in several strategy and innovation projects. It was during this time that she acquired fundamental skills such as business analysis, report writing and project management.

Lerato has been with GFPA foundation since its inception and she is passionate about giving back and girls empowerment. In her free time, she plays soccer.

Our Mission

Nandi Zama

Nandi is a military-trained pilot actively serving in the South African AirForce since 2006.

She is a Hercules C130BZ commander at 28 Squadron. Nandi has always been an advocate for making a tangible difference in all she does and the GFPA Foundation is a realisation of that. To be blessed to apply her skills, knowledge and experience in empowering girls just like her is what she believes professional women in aerospace should strive for. For whom much is given, much is expected. As the foundation, we hope to expand our footprint in South Africa and positively impact over 100 000 young people. More importantly we are establishing a pipeline, not just a once-off contact, of education and support to aspirant aerospace enthusiasts of the future.

Sefoka Kekana

Sefoka is an Airline Captain on the Bombardier Dash 8 - Q400. 

He holds the South African, Ghanaian and Nigerian Airline Transport Licences (ATPL). He believes in the upliftment and empowerment of society in general, and believes that the GFPA Foundation is a brilliant vehicle for girls and women to access fields that are still difficult to access. We all need to do what we can do to better the situation.

Sefoka is one of the founding members of GFPA foundation and he serves as both a treasure for the foundation and Global fund.

Linda Ngozwana

Linda is a  qualified Aeronautical Engineer from the University of the Witwatersrand.

Being in a male-dominated field, Linda felt the need to be a part of the GFPA Foundation in order to bring support to young girls who want to pursue careers in aviation and STEAM. Linda believes in breaking boundaries and stereotypes and hopes to inspire other young black girls to do the same by leading in the promotion of gender equality and access to quality education as is underpinned in SDG 4 and 5.

Science and technology are perceived as fundamental forces behind economic development, and Linda aspires to be at the forefront of innovation. She dreams of always being actively involved in the development of the knowledge economy and technology advancements in Africa and believes the GFPA Foundation has all the ingredients to achieve this.

Linda is a delegate for United Nation’s Camp 2030, which will take place in New York, September 2020.

Zethu Gumede

Zethu studied Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science at UKZN and completed her honours in Geography at the University of the Witwatersrand.

She currently works as an Air Traffic Service Officer at OR Tambo International Airport. She is a member of the Organization of Women in Science in the Developing World (OWSD-NC) which has stemmed her passion to get more women at the school level to choose subjects in maths and science. Zethu hopes the foundation serves as a beacon of hope for South African girl children that they can become whatever they choose to be. She hopes they are also given an opportunity to see individuals like themselves who are successful and believe it is possible for themselves too.

Leroy Bakasa

Leroy is an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer under the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) and an Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic under the US Federal Aviation Administration(FAA). 

He served 10 years in the South African Air Force where he acquired more of the love for aviation. Leroy currently works for Safair Operations Pty Ltd as an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer on the L-382/C130 and Boeing 737-400 and 737-800.

Leroy joined the GFPA Foundation to make a difference in the lives of girls who love to be in aviation. In doing so his hope and vision for this year under GFPA is to impact as many girls lives as possible making them part of the aviation family.

Renee Smith

Renee started her career as a draughtsman in the ‘90s, in a class of 40 men and just two women. 

Determined to enter the male-dominated engineering industry, Renee has since worked in a number of industries over the past 20 years, including road design and traffic engineering, wastewater treatment plants, and civil infrastructure. She has worked in ICT as a Network Administrator while completing her A+ and MCSE qualifications. Renee has designed websites and worked as an Operations Manager for a South African Packaging Machinery manufacturing company.

Today Renee is able to work on airports all over the world. As an Airport Designer specialising in Airside systems and electrical design at NACO, a Royal HaskoningDHV company, she gets to live her passion of not only creating infrastructure and spaces that will make a tangible difference for future generations, but also playing an active role in closing the gender gap in the engineering industry.

To this end, Renee is part of the GFPA Foundation’s Executive Team. The Foundation recognises that although much is being done to change the gender landscape in aviation, we need to do more to attract suitably trained and market-ready professionals that can meet the needs of the industry in future. Through initiatives like Girls in Aviation Day, STEAM Clubs and Online Aviation Training as part of her Portfolios at GFPA, Renee believes she can share her knowledge and empower girls and women to become the best they can be. She loves being part of the change and wishes to see in the world. Renee is active in her networks by sharing her ideas and encouraging others to be part of the solution. Renee became a member of Women in Aviation International (WAI) in November 2019.

In 2019, Renee became a Registered Member of the South African Institute of Draughting and is studying towards her N6 Civil Engineering Technical Certification.

Kutlwano Hutamo

Kutlwano Hutamo is a partner in KEMT Consulting (Pty) Ltd. She is the managing director at Washesha, an online grocery store that she co-founded in 2016. 

She has 11 years of experience in the intellectual property (IP) sector and has served articles at Adams & Adams - one of the leading IP law firms in South Africa. Further, Kutlwano worked in some of South Africa’s cutting-edge science councils in Africa (Agricultural Research Council and Council for Scientific and Industrial Research) to manage IP as well as IP policy implementation to implement policy and create IP awareness. She has also worked at the University of South Africa where she managed implementation of IP projects aimed at creating IP awareness as well as implementation of policies related policies thereto. Kutlwano is currently completing her LLB studies through the University of South Africa with the aim of becoming an admitted attorney.

Kutlwano has a background in the biological sciences having attained a Masters in Veterinary Tropical Diseases from the University of Pretoria. She has also obtained a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from the Gordon Institute of Business Science. Her MBA research project involved developing a strategic framework to increase the chances of survival of small and medium enterprises. Kutlwano is passionate about empowering the next generations of scientists.

Kaone Rubicelle Kamanakao

Kaone is a qualified Commercial Pilot’s License holder with multi-engine, instrument, and Grade 2 flight instructor’s rating. 

She has worked as a flight instructor, “Bush” pilot, flight operations manager and flight operations inspector with the Civil Aviation Authority of Botswana. Currently, she is an aviation ground training manager with Wilderness Air Botswana.

Kaone is also the President of Women in Aviation Botswana (WAIB)Chapter and Executive Director GFPA Foundation Botswana. She is responsible for securing funding and facilitation of all educational programmes run by WAIB and GFPA such as the annual Girls in Aviation Day. She would like to establish an aviation firm in Botswana and become a corporate jet pilot. Short term goals are to bring transformation to Botswana’s aviation industry so that it can be inclusive, gender-balanced and able to meet global competitor’s standards.

Lentle Irish Labane

She is currently working at Mack Air based in Maun, Botswana as a line pilot. 

She aspires to work in a field with corporate jets and fulfil her dream of flying ‘privately’. Although it may seem restrictive depending on the company policies, the pros about it is you get to travel, network and learn vast cultures in these glorious sleek jets.

Lentle is part of Women in Aviation (WAI), Botswana Chapter from 2016. She joined the chapter to seek opportunities and soar higher, teach other women and young ladies that as long as you work hard, you will achieve your dreams. She believes that teamwork makes the dream work with discipline, patience and persistence. Furthermore, she appreciates WAI for helping her understand that there is more to aviation than just piloting.

Tshepo Mugoni

She is currently Quality assurance manager at Wilderness Air. 

Tshepo has a passion for organisation and compliance, coupled with a love for travel and extensive experience in-flight safety and flying. She possesses over twelve years of experience in the aviation industry in both flying and managerial positions. She is deliberate about contributing toward the growth of the aviation and tourism industry in Botswana and aims to gain a well-rounded knowledge of aviation management and quality assurance with the goal of working toward safe skies and mitigating human error.

Fadimatou Noutchemo Simo 

Fadimatou Noutchemo Simo is Founder and President of the YOUNG AFRICAN AVIATION PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATION (YAAPA) and HEFA Group her aviation consultancy firm. Winner of the IATA High Flyer Award 2019, the Commonwealth point of light 2019 and the AFCAC Recognition certificate for promoting the industry to the nextgen, she holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and an IATA diploma for airline management.

She founded YAAPA in 2014 a nonprofit organization to educate youths through communication on aviation careers, as well as create a platform of exchange between the aviation stakeholders and the next generation of aviation professionals in Africa to meet up with the future demand of skilled workers in the industry.

YAAPA partnered with GFPA to create GFPA Cameroon to reinforce the cooperation and share of best practices across the GFPA network.Fadi is a member of the women in Aviation International Organization and actively promotes gender equality across the continent by advocating for stakeholders to invest more on human capital development through innovative methods in Africa to ensure a safe and secure aviation for the next generation. Her message for gender equality in the African aviation industry is for each male professional to identify a woman they will Inspire, Mentor and Empower to have more women in Aviation.

YAAPA looks forward to launching its Youth Aviation Tech Africa Program as well as its community centres to promote aviation to facilitate tourism amongst the Next generation of Young Africans to ensure no country is left behind.
